General Home Remodeling Questions

How does your process work?

Our design-build process starts with a phone conversation to understand your goals, project scope and timeline. This initial conversation ensures we are a good fit for your project. If we are aligned on these key items, we’ll conduct a site visit to better understand your specific needs and identify any feasibility concerns.

When you engage with us for design and planning we establish a target budget based on our preliminary discussions. We then work closely with you to create a design you love. Based on your approved design and scope, we provide detailed specifications and a total cost estimate.

Once final approvals and a written agreement are in place, we complete pre-construction planning and permitting. For more details on our process, please click here.

Can you give me design ideas?

Absolutely. We seek to listen first, to understand your goals and ensure that we incorporate your ideas. That said, we often share new ideas to help bring your vision to life. If you opt to engage us for design and planning, we create multiple design options, placing an emphasis on functional space planning. We refine the design based on your feedback and prepare written specifications. You can request a consultation here

How do we design the space?

We start by working with you to define your project’s scope and target budget. We also work with you to understand your needs and wants from the space. During the design and planning phase, we create multiple design options that reflect your personal preferences. It’s a collaborative process which typically involves several meetings that occur over the course of a few months. Learn more about our design-build process here.

How long does it take?

Project timelines vary depending on the scope and the area being renovated. On average, design and planning takes one to three months, pre-construction two to six months, and construction another two to six months.

I’m curious about costs? What happens if there are overruns?

We recommend setting your budget as a range rather than a fixed number. This allows us to present options that fit different levels of investment. Once design and planning are complete, we provide detailed specifications along with a total cost estimate. Any additional costs must be approved by you with a written change order.

Do we have to get permits? Or do you take care of that?

We typically handle permits for our clients. We take care of securing all necessary approvals and ensure your project complies with local building requirements.

Do we have to move out during the remodel?

For whole home renovations in Cleveland, moving out may be necessary. For kitchens, we recommend temporary arrangements, such as using your outdoor grill, microwave, or hotplate to prepare meals. During a bathroom renovation, you should plan to use another bathroom in the home, or make other arrangements. Basement renovations are not usually as disruptive to everyday life, and you can likely remain in your home. Regardless of the project type, our team sets up a dedicated work area that’s sectioned off to help limit dust during the renovation.

Can we be here during construction? Do we need to move out during the remodel?

The ideal scenario is to move out during construction, as it allows our team to work more efficiently and keeps you in a safe, comfortable environment. However, in most instances, moving out is not desirable or feasible. If you choose to remain in your home during construction, we’ll coordinate with you to create a workable plan, including setting up contained areas to minimize dust and disruption.

How and when do we pick out materials?

Material selections are made during the pre-construction phase, with guidance from our team and approved vendor partners. We source all materials through these trusted vendors to ensure quality, warranty support, and timely delivery, helping your project stay on schedule and within budget.

Will you help me pick out materials?

Yes. We guide you through the selection process with support from our trusted vendor partners, who have professional showrooms and knowledgeable staff. This ensures you get high quality materials that meet your personal preferences and renovation needs.

Who do you use for cabinets, countertops and tile?

We work exclusively with our approved vendors, most of whom are local businesses with professional showrooms. These trusted trade partners provide quality products, reliable service, and responsive support throughout your project.

Do you supply materials? Or do we buy cabinets and tile?

All project materials and fixtures are supplied by us through our approved vendors. This helps prevent delays, keeps warranties intact, and makes sure you’re getting quality products at a competitive price.

Who is doing the work? Do you work with subcontractors?

Yes. While some services may be handled in-house, we also work with trusted subcontractors who specialize in their respective trades. At Advance Design & Remodel, our approved trade partners are a valuable part of our team and they help us ensure professional results.

How do you handle getting in and out of the home?

Most often, with your permission, we use a lockbox with a key you provide. We work with you to set clear entry points and paths for our crew. We designate storage areas for tools and materials and outline which parts of the home are off limits during construction.

What do you do for dust control?

We use plastic barriers and other containment methods to limit the spread of dust. Some dust is inevitable in nearby rooms. However, we keep work areas as contained as possible and discuss additional precautions with you before work begins.
